Tour of NC: Cape Hatteras to Coinjock
We were sad to leave the beautiful KOA located right on the beach of Cape Hatteras and a short walk from the sound side of the island.
However, it was time to move along, so after we spent the morning doing laundry, filling a propane tank, and packing up we began our journey further northwards to the KOA West Currituck OBX. It’s technically located in Coinjock.
Our first impression was that it is out there… about 45 minutes from the actual OBX (and that’s without traffic). Listing themselves as OBX in their name feels a little deceptive.
Despite it being so far north, the drive to Corolla is almost the same, time-wise, from both KOA locations. When we initially booked the campgrounds we were unable to get full hookups at the Cape Hatteras location, which is why we booked this one too, but we were able to upgrade to full hookups in Cape Hatteras so it still felt like the better location.
That being said, once we got over the initial shock of the far drive, the campground in Coinjock is super cute. They are having a luau weekend - so we of course couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try coconut bowling! We also got some ice cream from the friendliest people ever at the KOA’s grill, drove their super cool quad-cycles on their makeshift dirt go-cart track, got to know our neighbors, Liam biked, we cooked kabobs, and enjoyed our beautiful location right on the sound!
If you do try this KOA definitely get the deluxe patio sites on the sound. We got site O10 and it’s beautiful and it even has a very photogenic tree..
